Growing up, I possessed a tremendous talent that, even today, remains underused as I continue building this vision. I could picture something three-dimensionally, break it down bolt by bolt, nail by nail, and construct some incredible things.
But there was one structure I could never build on my own: the support system beneath that talent.
With the right tools, guidance, encouragement and opportunity, it could have carried me to places I may never fully know. That was a missed opportunity in my life, but one I still hope to explore again. More importantly, it became the foundation for a question I could never shake.
How many other people never discover what they’re truly capable of because no one ever gave them the chance to try?
When Everything Fell Apart
A little over six years ago, I became very ill with Lyme disease. I could barely walk, could hardly think straight, and felt as though everything around me was falling apart. My first son had just been born, and the weight of it all became almost unbearable. I looked around and saw a struggling world, a disconnected community, and my own chance to explore my abilities slipping further away. I truly believed I might not be here much longer.
After I had nearly given up, a small glimmer of hope began to rise within me. I realized I could not leave this world exactly as I had found it, a place where so many people lacked opportunity, tools, guidance and support to discover who they really were.
A concept began brewing in my soul, and before long, I was completely swept away by it.
A Twenty-Dollar Idea That Could Change a Life
I kept returning to one simple thought. Something as small as a twenty-dollar starter kit, paired with a little self-guided learning or someone willing to mentor me, could have changed the direction of my life. Today, we also have incredible resources like YouTube that allow someone to take those first few steps from the comfort of their own home.
I don’t want another child, or anyone else, to reach adulthood without ever discovering the incredible abilities they possess.
What We Give Our Children
Many parents are living day to day, working tirelessly to provide for their families. Some are focused on giving their children the best life they can. Others are simply trying to make it through the challenges surrounding them. Naturally, we think about toys, clothes and the things our children ask for. From inexpensive toys to the biggest and brightest ones on the shelf, there is always something competing for their attention.
But the things that shape our lives most profoundly are often our passions, our talents and our natural abilities.
Talent-based starter kits are rarely the first thing on a parent’s mind, especially when money is tight. Unfortunately, many children grow into adults without ever discovering what they might have been capable of creating, building, playing, inventing, repairing or becoming.
I wanted to change that for my family, for this community and eventually for many others.
More Than Starter Kits
Over time, I realized this mission was never really about selling starter kits. They are simply one piece of something much larger.
Stoney Shire was built on a simple belief. Every person has something within them worth discovering, and every community becomes stronger when people are creating, building, teaching, repairing, performing and sharing those gifts with one another.
Some people paint. Some work with wood. Others write music, weld steel, restore antiques, forge knives, crochet blankets, design websites, grow gardens or invent things no one has ever seen before. Those abilities do not simply appear overnight. They begin with curiosity, encouragement and the opportunity to try.
From Consumers Back to Creators
Somewhere along the way, many of our communities drifted away from that. Main Streets became quieter. Neighbors became more disconnected. Too many people began believing they had nothing unique to contribute. We slowly became consumers instead of creators, buying more while making less, scrolling more while building less, and losing the confidence that comes from creating something with our own hands.
I believe we can reverse that. That is why Stoney Shire exists.
Why Stoney Shire Exists
It is why we support local artisans and craftsmen. It is why we host community events. It is why we celebrate musicians, creators, collectors and small businesses. It is why you’ll find antiques sitting beside handmade goods. It is why we’re building talent-based starter kits, educational opportunities and spaces where people can share what they know.
Every part of Stoney Shire points toward the same purpose: helping people discover their abilities, connect with one another and build meaningful lives through creativity, craftsmanship and community.
The starter kits are simply one of the first steps. They lower the barrier for someone who has always wondered, “Could I do that?” They replace uncertainty with possibility. A small box may contain only a few simple tools, but what it truly offers is permission to begin.
If enough people begin discovering and sharing their abilities again, something much bigger starts to happen. Families become stronger. Communities become more connected. Young people grow up believing they do not have to leave home to build a meaningful life. They can create one right where they are.
That has always been the vision behind Stoney Shire.
It is not simply about opening a store. It is not about selling products. It is about helping rebuild the foundation beneath the people who will one day build everything else. Six years later, after countless hurdles, setbacks and exhausting workloads, I am still here. And I am still moving this mission forward.
What’s Next for Stoney Shire & Company
Very soon, one of my earliest goals will finally begin taking shape at Stoney Shire & Company. Talent-based starter kits will start arriving at the shop, giving people an affordable opportunity to try something new and perhaps discover an ability that stays with them for the rest of their lives.
